I am an American of Lithuanian descent and I write to let you know how important it is for me to see my ancestral country, Lithuania, be invited to join NATO. During your Presidential campaign you indicated that you would support taking up NATO enlargement at the next NATO Summit meeting in 2002. I trust you will do so. Hopefully, the United States will lead its NATO allies in inviting at the next NATO Summit all qualified applicants to become members. I especially urge that Lithuania and the other Baltic countries be invited. They have made great progress since regaining their independence and they can contribute significantly to the Alliance.
I urge you to take a leadership role in enlarging NATO and inviting Lithuania and other qualified applicants, including the remaining Baltic countries, to become members. Lithuania is a working democracies with a free market economy and the rule of law. It is meeting the established standards for NATO membership and it can be expected to contribute their fair share of resources to the Alliance.
Please support the enlargement of NATO and lead our NATO allies in inviting at the next NATO Summit meeting all qualified aspirants to become members. Lithuania and the other Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia are prepared to join and should be invited. Please do not permit Russian objections to result in Lithuania being denied NATO membership.
I support NATO enlargement and I believe that the President and the Senate should support it too. NATO enlargement will make the United States safer, the NATO organization stronger and Europe more secure. The next opportunity to enlarge NATO will be at the NATO Summit meeting in 2002. The United States should take a leadership role among our Allies in favor of inviting all qualified aspirant countries, especially Lithuania and the other Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, to become members in 2002. Lithuania is a democracy with a free market economy and the rule of law and it has been working hard to meet the standards established for NATO membership. Thank you for your consideration of this matter as it is vitally important to all Americans. I hope that you would agree with the views expressed.
Sincerely yours, Joe Citizenas
As an American of Lithuanian heritage, I am for keeping America strong and the country of my ancestry, Lithuania, free and independent. That is why I support the enlargement of NATO and urge that all qualified candidates, especially Lithuania and the other Baltic Republics of Estonia, be included.
Please encourage President Bush’s Administration to take the lead in forging a consensus among our NATO allies to enlarge the Alliance. At the 2002 NATO Summit all qualified aspirants, including the Baltic countries, should be invited to become members. Also, I respectfully (thank you for joining the Senate Baltic Freedom Caucus) request that you consider joining the Senate Baltic Freedom Caucus. The Baltic Caucus, co-chaired By Senator Smith of Oregon and Senator Durbin of Illinois, provides excellent opportunities to obtain more information about Baltic related issues that are important to the United States. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely yours, Jonas Pilietis |
